Some common side effects of tadalafil include facial flushing, nasal congestion, and pain in the arms or legs. A few rare tadalafil side effects include a spinning sensation (vertigo), high blood pressure, and angina. Let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects, as well as anything that “just doesn’t seem right,” while taking tadalafil.
Side Effects of Tadalafil: An Introduction
As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with Tadalafil (Cialis®). However, not everyone who takes tadalafil will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate tadalafil well. When people do develop tadalafil side effects, in most cases they are minor, meaning they require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. In previous research studies, up to 3.1 percent of people on tadalafil stopped taking their medicine because of side effects.
Tadalafil has been studied extensively in clinical trials, with over 5,700 people having been evaluated. In these studies, side effects are always documented. Based on these studies, common tadalafil side effects, occurring in more than 2 percent of people, include:
- Headache — up to 15 percent of people
- Indigestion, known as dyspepsia — up to 10 percent of people
- Back pain — up to 6 percent of people
- Facial flushing — up to 3 percent of people
- Nasal congestion — up to 3 percent of people
- Muscle pain (known as myalgia) — up to 4 percent of people
- Pain in the arms or legs — up to 3 percent of people.
Rare Side Effects of Tadalafil
During clinical studies, there were a number of other side effects that occurred in less than 2 percent of people while they were taking tadalafil. It is difficult to tell whether these side effects occurred because of tadalafil or something else.
Some of these possible side effects include but are not limited to:
- Insomnia
- Unexplained rash
- Angina
- Migraines
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Dry mouth
- A spinning sensation (vertigo)
- Blurred vision
- A sudden decrease in or loss of hearing
- Other vision problems, such as seeing a blue tinge to objects or difficulty telling the difference between blue and green
- Prolonged erection lasting longer than four hours
- Painful erection lasting more than six hours (priapism).
In rare cases, serious problems can occur in the heart, brain, or blood vessels. These include:
- Chest pain
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Heart palpitations
- Sudden death.
In these cases, most of the people already had cardiovascular risk factors. Also, the side effects occurred during or shortly after sexual activity. For these reasons, it is difficult to tell whether the problems were related to the tadalafil, the person’s existing risk factors, sexual activity, or a combination of these things.

In people taking PDE5 inhibitors, including tadalafil, there have been rare cases of a condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition can lead to sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes. If you notice any unexplained changes in your vision while taking tadalafil, report them to your doctor immediately (see Cialis and Blindness).
There have been reports of transient global amnesia possibly due to tadalafil. Transient global amnesia is a temporary loss of short-term memory. People may not remember recent events and have an impaired ability to form new memories. It usually lasts 24 hours or less and typically has no long-term consequences.
Tadalafil Side Effects: Summary
When you take tadalafil, you may experience some or none of these side effects. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have side effects from a medicine that you have never tried. Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking tadalafil. Also, let you healthcare provider know if you develop something that “just doesn’t seem right.” While it may not be a side effect of tadalafil, your healthcare provider will still be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
