A five mg dose of Tadalafil (Cialis) daily helped males overcome erectile dysfunction and improved their sexual lives, besides being well tolerated, according to a new study.
Erectile dysfunction or ED is consistent inability to attain and maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.
The 12-week study monitored 342 men and their female partners, using several scientific questionnaires to assess changes in erectile function and sexual quality of life before and after treatment with a Tadalafil daily dose.
‘This is the first study of Tadalafil five mg daily dose in the treatment of men with ED in which the female partner reported improvement in sexual quality of life scores,’ said lead investigator Eusebio Rubio-Aurioles, professor of psychiatry at the Mexican National University.
‘The sexual quality of life scores also improved among males being treated. In addition, this study showed that daily dose of Tadalafil is effective and generally well tolerated in the treatment of erectile dysfunction,’ said Rubio-Aurioles, according to a release of Eli Lilly and Company.
The 16-week double-blind, multi-centric, randomised study followed 342 men with a minimum three-month history of ED, as well as their female partners who had adequate sexual function as measured by the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI).
Tadalafil (Cialis) five mg was generally well-tolerated, and the most frequently reported adverse events were headache, dyspepsia and nasal congestion. Three subjects in the Tadalafil group discontinued their participation in the study due to adverse events.
The recommended starting dose of Tadalafil in most patients is 10 mg, before sexual activity. It may be increased to 20 mg or decreased to five mg, based on individual efficacy and tolerability.
Males taking nitrates, often used for chest pain, should not take Cialis. Such a combination could cause a sudden, unsafe drop in blood pressure.
The study appeared in the May issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
